Chart At A Glance

  • It’s a new year on my charts, and already, there’s a stark contrast to last year. Third Day broke the record for the latest first Top 10 debut in a chart year back in November, when “I Need A Miracle” debuted at #7. Now, in the first week of 2013, we have a Top 10 debut already!
  • Lindsey Stirling, who just last month, made a historical #1 debut with the first instrumental song on my chart, a version of “What Child Is This” (also the first ever Christmas #1 debut), makes not just 1, but 2 additional appearances this week.
  • Original instrumentals “Elements” and “Crystallize” debut at #8 and #12 respectively, quite possibly the first time for an artist to have more than 1 song to debut inside my Top 25 in the same week. If anyone can breathe new life into my stagnant chart, it’s she!
  • However, Lindsey Stirling is not the only big story this week. There’s some unwritten tradition going on for the last few years now, where a song by the rockers of RED debuts the first week of January. First, it was “Start Again” in 2010, then “Faceless” in 2011, followed by “Who We Are” in 2012, and now, “Perfect Life” this year, which enters at #15.
  • As a result of the 3 debuts, there’s quite some movement this week, not uncommon since my Top 50 has been frozen the last two weeks for my year-end Christmas and annual Top 100.
  • However, little movement occurs inside my Top 10. In fact, Stirling’s “What Child Is This” hangs on at #1, even though Christmas is done and over with. We’ll see how long it’ll stay on top. It is one of my top favorite Christmas songs, after all! And who says some Christmas music isn’t good year-round?
  • Other charting Christmas songs do take a hit, however. Erica Lane’s “Angels In The Snow” slides 7 to #21, while Mandisa’s “Somebody’s Angel” and Francesca Battistelli’s “Heaven Everywhere” fall off. We also say goodbye to Group 1 Crew’s “He Said”, after a modest 28-week run.
  • Finally, let me comment on one change I’ve made, that’s been a long-time coming. Instead of dating my charts for the week just gone by, such as Dec 30, 2012 through Jan 5, 2013, in this case, I’m dating them for the upcoming (or current) week, which in this case Jan 6-12, 2013. That maybe, perhaps I don’t always seem a week behind—well, I can only hope.

For visual browsers only, Bullets (e.g., ▲ and ▼) appear on songs seeing a gain or loss of interest, regardless of movement. Upward bullets show gains—white for slight gains, aqua for high, and gold for very high. Downward bullets show losses—grey for slight losses, purple for high, and black for very high. “Jump Of The Week” and “Fall Of The Week”, when present, indicate songs with the biggest change in interest. Finally, songs below #50 become recurrents after 25+ weeks charting, or after 40+ weeks if they never peaked above #26. For more details, see my chart methodology.
