Anthony’s Weekly Top 50 Archives

#416: Christmas 2011

Chart At A Glance

  • This year, the trend toward instrumental pieces continues, as the whole chart now has 11 such songs, including 6 in my Top 25, and 4 in my Top 10
  • Still, many well-established vocal favorites maintain their high rank. For example, MercyMe’s “What Child Is This?”: in its very long charting history, it has yet to chart below #3
  • Just as remarkable, if not even more, is how 2009’s #1 debut, Aselin Debison’s “The Gift”, comes in at #1 yet again. It has even performed fairly well on my regular Top 20 Lifesongs in the past 2 years
  • In other news, songs by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Robert Mauti, and Avalon inch up a few spots
  • However, Becky Kelley has the year’s biggest mover with “Where’s The Line To See Jesus?”, up 24 spots to #26
  • This year may have the most songs being pushed downward. Few songs below my Top 25 manage to rise or even stand still, while a handful of old favorites slip off entirely, such as Amy Grant’s “Breath Of Heaven” and Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Christmas Eve”
  • Finally, a total of 6 songs debut, a smaller number than recent years, but still quite enough to shake up the chart
  • David Arkenstone scores the highest at #7 (“Winter Dreams”), while Dan Macaulay, Erica Lane, and Jason Gray score the most moving vocal debuts at #13, #22, and #32 respectively, with “So You Can Really Live”, “Angels In The Snow”, and “I Will Find A Way”
  • Note: Rank comparisons between now and last year are for song titles only. Meaning, if I favor a different artist’s version of a song this year than I did last year, the song still counts as having ranked last year
  • Another note: I only chart 1 version of a song in this Top 50; any indicated alternate versions following the main song titles are songs that I would consider ranking if I allowed multiple versions
  • For songs that have lyrics available, song titles are links to lyrics
  • For songs that have multiple artists, “[alt]” links go to the “Alternate Versions” list on the bottom of the page
  • “Watch” and “Hear” links lead to music videos, full-length audio, or audio samples of the songs
